Governance is defined as the systems and processes concerned with ensuring the overall direction, effectiveness, supervision and accountability of an organisation.
The Charity Commission guides trustees with specific duties and governance best practices. Depending on the charity’s size, annual reporting on their work and governance may be required.
While governance starts with the trustees, it certainly doesn’t end there. To govern effectively, they lean heavily on diverse perspectives and expertise. Staff, volunteers, advisors, subcommittee members, and key stakeholders all contribute valuable information and support, creating a collaborative network that informs sound decision-making at the highest level.
A good resource for looking at governance is the Charity Governance Code. Their website offers a practical tool to help charities and their trustees develop high standards of governance.
